North Country is a collection of chainstitch embroidery works by Hilary J. Corts, inspired by the profound influence of the Adirondack Mountains on her life. Her first solo exhibition serves as a playful tribute to the idyllic sanctuary that has provided peace and solace throughout her life. The Adirondack Park, where Corts spent every summer of her childhood living in her family's cabin, holds a special place in her heart.
Much of the show draws from her summers at the family cabin, known to locals as The Polka Dot. In 1950, her grandfather transported the cabin in pieces by car from Lake Ontario to the Adirondacks, where he reconstructed it and painted multicolored polka dots on the siding. Since then, it's been a gathering place for family and friends, as well as a comforting environment that encourages artistic self expression and creativity.
Corts employs the art of chainstitch embroidery to explore themes of stability, memory, and the natural world. Each piece showcases her unique craftsmanship and attention to detail, reflecting an unusual and humorous take on the essence of the region. The works capture the spirit of the Adirondacks through whimsical interpretations of the park’s vibrant wildlife, towering trees, and serene lakes. Inspired by the iconic signage commonly found throughout the Adirondack Park, like backcountry trail markers and handmade cabin plaques, Corts infuses these familiar components with personal significance. North Country is a playful celebration of the artist's ties to the region, incorporating all the natural elements and rustic charm that the Adirondacks has to offer.
